| What happened to the jobs promised to the youth? |
|
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reminded the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that on behalf of the people of Ghana, its presidential candidate, Professor John Evans Atta Mills on the occasion of the party’s campaign launch and outdooring of John Mahama as vice presidential candidate posed these five questions. Â What happened to the jobs promised to the youth?  This reminder is contained in a press statement issued and signed by the Communications Director of the NDC, Anna Tetteh in response to the news conference held by the National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Peter Mac Manu.  According to the statement, the NDC wishes to assure Ghanaians that this year, in this election campaign, the party will speak to the Ghanaian people on the issues that concern all of us most.  It said the NDC will address itself fully to responding to the issue of how to ensure that Government puts the interests of the most important stakeholders in this country-the Ghanaian people above every other interest and works to create a better Ghana for the majority of Ghanaians.  It added that the National Democratic Congress quote “will ensure that it addresses the basic questions affecting each and every one of us namely-how to improve our standard of living, to ensure that we can afford decent meals for our families and ourselves and how we can have a roof over our heads, How we can make sure that we send our children to schools where the basic standards of education are such that when they leave school they are numerate and literate and have the knowledge and skills that give them an understanding of their environment and help them find gainful employment. We will address ourselves to the challenges of increased fuel process and the costs of transportation “unquote.  Alluding to the issue of comparison of records, raised by the NPP Chairman at his news conference, the NDC’s Communications Director observed that one would want to know what records the NPP had when it was voted into office in the year 2000.  Anna Tetteh noted that the NPP was elected on the basis of their promises and surely the electorate when evaluating their performance will have to measure their performance against the promises that they made when campaigning for power.  The NDC’s Communications Director asserts that the NDC as a political party is focusing on putting people first because it is quite clear that notwithstanding the much trumpeted effective economic management of the NPP the living conditions of Ghanaians have deteriorated. She supports her assertion saying the information contained in the Ghana Demographic Health Survey of 2003, and the UNDP’s Ghana Human Development Report 2007, indicates that in spite of having increased access to resources, high commodity prices and debt relief; the improvements in the conditions of living for Ghanaians have   shown deterioration in the living conditions of Ghanaians.  She adds that quote “Ghana’s position on the Human Development Index plummeted from its rank as the 128th placed country on the Human Development Index in 2000 to the 135th position in 2007. If this rate of decline is sustained for another four years of NPP government Ghana would be ranked as the 139th country on the human development index and no doubt would considered a basket case by the rest of the world. Just seven examples will make the point for now. in spite of the “exceptional management capabilities†of the government witness the following, under 5 years of age mortality rates have worsened from 108 deaths per 1000 births in 2007 to 111 deaths per1000 births by 2007, Malnutrition: in Ghana 37% of all children under the age of 5 are malnourished-they are underweight and short for their average age, the highest incidence of this malnutrition can be found in Northern Ghana, Central Region ÂÂ
