|
The Government is moving at lightening speed to address concerns raised by industry and the Ghanaian public about the recent Utility price increases.
Sources close to the castle told Citi News that an announcement by the PURC is expected by the close of week after extensive consultations are done. Citi News has learnt that Vice President John Mahama chaired a high level meeting between the various stakeholders to consider further concerns raised by labour and industry players about the recent increase in utility tariffs on Monday, July 26. The meeting which was a follow up to previous consultative sessions was attended by officials from the Ministry of Finance, the energy advisory team and the advisors to the President. They reviewed various options relative to the concerns of Ghanaians. It is recalled that the Government moments after the announcement by the PURC on the current increases called on the PURC to dialogue with the various stakeholders who are raising concerns. Some of the stakeholders such as the Ghana Employers Association amongst others have sent representation to President Mills to lay bare their concerns. President Mills in one of such meeting promised governments commitment to intervene in the current circumstances to promote industry and employment. Following Monday's meeting, the Vice President John Mahama asked the PURC to ensure that the government announced subsidies are passed into the intended beneficiaries while it concludes discussions on how to mitigate the effects especially on the non-residential class of electricity consumers. Meanwhile discussions are also moving ahead on how to ensure that consumers who reside in compound houses are taken care off. source: citifmonline.com
