| Road accidents on the rise -NRSC |

Statistics show that road accidents involving motor cyclist mostly in the Northern part of the country saw a rise for the first half of 2010 whiles that involving pedestrians and occupants of long distance buses saw a decline. So far, a total of 533 people died and 2,960 received in three thousand five and sixteen road accidents recorded nationwide between January and June this year. About four thousand eight hundred and forty one vehicles comprising two thousand four hundred and sixty six commercial vehicles , two thousand and sixty five private and three hundred and ten motor bikes were involved in these accidents. Within the same period last year, three hundred and thirty six people died and two thousand two hundred and fifty five people received injuries from three thousand and ninety four road accidents. Executive Director of the National Road Safety Commission, Noble Appiah tells GOLDNEWS in interview on Thursday that that it is becoming worrying that whiles the commission is working hard to curb road accidents in some areas, other areas are also emerging. He says the commission is embarking on an educational campaign in the Northern region to encourage people to wear crash helmets when riding. Mr. Appiah however called on all stakeholders in the fight against road accidents to support the National Road Safety Commission to reduce or totally eliminate road accidents. Out of the three thousand five hundred and sixteen road accidents recorded so far this year, Greater Accra region recorded the highest of one thousand three hundred and forty one, followed by Ashanti region with four hundred and fifty four, Tema with four hundred and twenty one and central region recording three hundred and fifty two.
